For the best views in San Francisco, two ticketed options and a long list of viewpoints are worth your time. The SkyStar Wheel is the cheapest at $19, rated 4.36 from 32 reviews, and Coit Tower is the tallest at 64 m, with a $69 walking tour that includes entry. My pick for a first visit is the SkyStar Wheel about an hour before sunset, then Twin Peaks.

The best views in San Francisco come from a hilly city built around a bay, so you get height from the ground as well as from a structure. Coit Tower stands on Telegraph Hill, and the SkyStar Wheel stands in Fisherman’s Wharf, about 1 km (0.6 miles) away in a straight line, from the coordinates in my data. The table has the numbers I can cite for each.
| Deck | Height | Open-air? | Price from | Top ticket rating | Page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SkyStar Wheel | 45.7 m wheel, per Wikipedia | No, enclosed pod for up to six, per the listing | $19 | 4.36 from 32 | Tickets |
| Coit Tower | 64 m tower, per Wikipedia | Not stated in my data | $69 for the walking tour | No rating yet | Tickets |
Prices are US dollars from the GetYourGuide listings I checked in October 2026. The Coit Tower product is a guided walk through Little Italy with interior entry, so it is not the city’s own observation level ticket, and I have not confirmed that fee.
The SkyStar Wheel is the one I’d book first for the best views in San Francisco if you want a ticket, because it is cheap, close to the water and easy to fit in. Wikipedia says it is 150 feet (45.7 m) tall and has stood in Fisherman’s Wharf since November 2023. At that height the horizon is about 24.1 km away, per the horizon formula in my data.

You look at North Beach, Russian Hill and Telegraph Hill, then out to the bay. One reviewer wrote that the ride lasts roughly 10 minutes, so I’d allow about 30 minutes with the queue. Pier 39 is 0.3 km away, so it pairs with a walk along the waterfront. The details are on my SkyStar Wheel tickets page.
Coit Tower gives some of the best views in San Francisco of the downtown towers, Alcatraz and the bay, from the top of Telegraph Hill. Google Maps rates it 4.6 from 16,087 reviews, and lists it as open 10 AM to 5 PM daily, so confirm that on the city’s Recreation and Parks page. The ground-floor murals matter too, and Wikipedia says most can be seen free of charge during open hours.

LetzGo City Tours
My pick: A 2.5 hour guided walk through Little Italy that ends at the tower, $69 with interior entry. It is a tour, not a timed observation ticket, and it has no rating yet.

The listing does not say that the tour takes you up to the observation level, so ask the operator if the view is your goal. If the view is all you want, the walk is a lot to pay for. I’d take it for the murals and the guide. More on the fee, stairs and hours is on my Coit Tower tickets page.
Many of the best views in San Francisco are not on a deck at all, and this is the section I’d read before buying a ticket. These places are viewpoints in my Google Maps data, and I have no entry terms or prices for any of them, so check each one before you go.
Twin Peaks is the classic wide view, rated 4.7 from 13,908 reviews and about 6.6 km (4.1 miles) from Coit Tower. For the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate View Point is rated 4.9 from 6,187 reviews, and Battery Spencer, listed as an observation deck, is 4.8 from 5,948. Golden Gate Postcard Viewpoint is 4.9 from 701. Closer to the decks, Telegraph Hill Viewpoint (4.8 from 10 reviews) is 0.1 km from Coit Tower, and Transamerica Viewpoint of City (4.9 from 22) is 0.2 km away.

The Golden Gate Bridge itself is rated 4.8 from 85,378 reviews and sits about 6.7 km from Coit Tower and 5.9 km from the wheel. Golden Gate Overlook (4.8 from 2,163) and Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point (4.8 from 1,597) are nearby alternatives. Bay Bridge Lookout is 4.8 from 38 reviews and 1.8 km from Coit Tower. I pair one hill at sunset with one ticketed view, since the hills give the frame and the decks give the height. The viewpoints are where the best views in San Francisco for photographs tend to come from, because you can wait for the light.
The weather is the same for both decks, so I use the Coit Tower year of data as the city reference. Per Open-Meteo, May was the clearest month in 2025 at 28 percent cloud cover with one rainy day, and January was next at 37 percent. July was the cloudiest at 74 percent, and February and March each had 12 rainy days. Sunset runs from 16:51 in December to 20:33 in June.

typical cloud cover that week
Sunset and cloud cover for the same dates in 2025 at the deck (Open-Meteo historical weather (ERA5), 2025); sunset moves by about a minute between years.
My rule for the best views in San Francisco is to arrive 45 to 60 minutes before sunset. In May that means a visit around 7 PM, and in December around 4 PM. Cloud matters more than the hour, so if you can only choose one thing, choose a clear May or autumn day. October was 39 percent cloud cover in 2025 with five rainy days, so a clear autumn afternoon is realistic, but I would still check the forecast the morning of your visit and keep a second day free in case fog or rain moves in.
What each deck shows depends on where it stands, and my Google Maps data gives straight-line distances from both. From Coit Tower, Alcatraz Island (4.7 from 45,362 reviews) is 3.1 km away, the Ferry Building is 1.3 km, and the Transamerica Pyramid, rated 4.5 from 1,508 reviews, is 0.8 km. The Golden Gate Bridge is 6.7 km, so on a clear day it is a distant shape rather than a close frame.
From the wheel, Alcatraz is closer at 2.2 km, the Maritime National Historical Park is 0.9 km, and Pier 39 is 0.3 km, so the water and the piers fill the foreground. The bridge is 5.9 km away, and Fort Point National Historic Site, rated 4.8 from 4,233 reviews, is 5.6 km. Union Square, rated 4.4 from 37,518 reviews, is 2.4 km from the wheel and 1.6 km from Coit Tower. The distances explain how I split the choices: the wheel for the bay and the island, the tower for the skyline, and a viewpoint for the bridge.
The two decks are 1.0 km (0.6 miles) apart in a straight line, from the coordinates in my data, so you can do both in one afternoon. Walking is a little longer than the straight line, and Telegraph Hill is steep, so allow time for the climb and some rest at the top. If the weather turns, I would keep the tower for another day, since a grey sky takes away most of what the height gives you. I’d ride the wheel first and walk up to Coit Tower for the late light.
I’ve kept this list to one line per visitor, so you can find yourself quickly.
If you can only choose one paid view, I’d book the SkyStar Wheel, the top of my best views in San Francisco list. Add Twin Peaks on a clear evening, and you will have seen the city from the water side and from above.
From my Google Maps data, the best known are the Golden Gate Bridge (4.8 from 85,378 reviews), Pier 39 (4.6 from 139,140), Alcatraz Island (4.7 from 45,362), Golden Gate Park (4.8 from 44,779) and the Ferry Building (4.6 from 38,650). For views specifically, I'd add Coit Tower and Twin Peaks.
I think so on a clear day. Google Maps rates it 4.6 from 16,087 reviews, and Wikipedia says the tower overlooks the city and the bay. The only product I found on GetYourGuide is a $69 walking tour with interior entry, so I'd check the city's own fee for the observation level.
For views, the quieter spots in my data are Transamerica Viewpoint of City (4.9 from 22 reviews), Telegraph Hill Viewpoint (4.8 from 10) and Bay Bridge Lookout (4.8 from 38). Their review counts are tiny next to the big landmarks, which suggests few visitors. I have no prices or hours for them.
Golden Gate View Point is rated 4.9 from 6,187 reviews on Google Maps, and Golden Gate Postcard Viewpoint 4.9 from 701. Battery Spencer, an observation deck, is 4.8 from 5,948. For a picture from the water side, the SkyStar Wheel at $19 gives you the bay from 45.7 m.
For the city and the bay together, I'd pick Twin Peaks, rated 4.7 from 13,908 reviews on Google Maps. For a ticketed view close to the water, I'd ride the SkyStar Wheel, and for Telegraph Hill and the murals, Coit Tower, which is 64 m tall according to Wikidata.
The cheapest ticketed view I found is the SkyStar Wheel at $19 on GetYourGuide, rated 4.36 from 32 reviews. The Coit Tower walking tour with interior entry is $69. I have no prices for the viewpoints, so I can't tell you whether they are free; check each one before you go.
Per Open-Meteo data for 2025, May was the clearest month at 28 percent cloud cover with one rainy day, and July the cloudiest at 74 percent. Sunset runs from 16:51 in December to 20:33 in June. I'd arrive 45 to 60 minutes before sunset to catch daylight and dusk.
